Timber Procurement Specialist

Description:

The Timber Procurement Specialist plays a crucial role in establishing and nurturing relationships with landowners, loggers, and timber dealers to secure a reliable supply of high-quality logs for our mill. The ideal candidate will be proactive, a fast learner, and motivated to progress into leadership roles.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Acquire pine stumpage from private landowners.
  • Conduct timber cruising on private and U.S. Forest Service lands.
  • Manage timber harvesting operations effectively.
  • Purchase wood delivered by the supplier force.
  • Expand the supplier network to meet future demands of the mill.
  • Perform field visits to educate loggers on specific mill requirements for logs.
  • Act as scale house backup when necessary.
  • Collaborate with the Procurement Manager to maintain wood flow and log size specifications.
  • Coordinate with sister mills to fulfill enterprise demands.
  • Engage with mill management on continual improvement initiatives.

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience with a strong emphasis on safety.
  • Effective leadership, coordination, and communication skills.
  • Proficient analytical capabilities.
  • Ability to work in a team, including collaboration with mill-related departments.
  • Self-motivated with efficient planning and execution abilities.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office.
  • Aptitude to learn timber cruising techniques, market log pricing, timber appraisals, SFI auditing, and compliance with best management practices.
  • Strong procurement skills with an ability to foster relationships with suppliers and explore new sourcing avenues.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A 4-year degree in Forestry, Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Natural Resource Management, or Wildlife Management.
  • At least 3 years of procurement experience.
  • Familiarity with the local area and contractors.
  • Basic understanding of lumber mill operations.

  • Passing a pre-employment drug screen and background check is mandatory.
